What's your metal worth?

Estimate the melt value of any coin, bar, or piece of jewelry using today's live spot price.

Estimated melt value

Pure metal content—

Per piece—
Melt value is the raw metal only. Dealers buy a bit below it and sell above it (the "premium") to cover minting, shipping, and overhead. Collectible and graded coins can be worth far more than melt.
The Stacker's Guide

Stack smarter, not harder.

New to precious metals? Start here. Straight answers to the questions we hear most on stream.

Spot price vs. premium

Spot is the live market price for one troy ounce of raw metal, set by global futures trading. It moves all day, every weekday.

Premium is everything above spot: minting, distribution, shipping, and dealer margin. Every physical product carries one.

  • Generic rounds and bars carry the lowest premiums.
  • Government coins (Eagles, Maples) cost more but are the easiest to resell.
  • Small sizes (1/10 oz gold, 1 g bars) cost more per ounce than big ones.
Rule of thumb: compare price per ounce of pure metal, not price per piece.

Bullion, numismatic & junk silver

  • Bullion — valued for metal content. Bars, rounds, and modern coins like the Silver Eagle. Price tracks spot closely.
  • Numismatic — valued for rarity, condition, and history. Graded coins (PCGS/NGC) can sell for many times melt.
  • Junk silver — pre-1965 US dimes, quarters, and halves (90% silver). "Junk" only means no collector premium. About 0.715 oz of silver per $1 face value.
Stacking for weight? Lean bullion & junk. Collecting for the hunt? Numismatics are the fun part.

What should I buy first?

  • Start with silver. A low price per ounce lets you build a stack and learn the market without big swings in dollars.
  • Pick recognizable pieces — Silver Eagles, Maples, or name-brand 1 oz rounds. Easy to verify, easy to sell.
  • Add gold in small, liquid sizes like 1/10 oz coins once you're comfortable.
  • Buy on a schedule instead of trying to time the market. Weekly or monthly beats guessing.
Set a budget before a live show — auctions are fast and fun. Stack with your head, not your thumb.

The gold:silver ratio

The ratio is how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. Over the last century it's ranged roughly from 15:1 to over 100:1.

  • A high ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold. Many stackers favor silver then.
  • A low ratio means gold is the relative bargain.
  • Some long-term stackers "trade the ratio," swapping metals at extremes to grow total ounces.
The ratio is a lens, not a crystal ball. It's never a guarantee of where prices go next.

How to spot a fake

  • Weigh & measure. Fakes usually miss on weight, diameter, or thickness. Check them against the mint's published specs.
  • Magnet slide. Silver and gold aren't magnetic, and silver drags slowly down a strong magnet. A strong snap means steel inside.
  • Ping test. Real silver rings with a long, high tone when tapped lightly.
  • Electronic verifiers like Sigma test the metal through the surface without damaging it.
The best test is a trusted seller. If the price is far below spot, it's a red flag.

Storing your stack

  • Handle by the edges, or with cotton/nitrile gloves. Skin oils leave spots on proof finishes.
  • Use capsules, tubes, and PVC-free flips. PVC breaks down and leaves green residue on coins.
  • Home safe or safe-deposit box? A home safe gives instant access. A bank box gives off-site security. Many stackers split it.
  • Insure it and keep receipts. Homeowner's policies often cap coverage for metals. Gains may be taxed as collectibles, so ask your tax pro.
